An inspector and a head constable of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) were suspended indefinitely over dereliction of duty on Saturday.

While city police commissioner T Suneel Kumar said inspector Prakash and head constable Sathish, attached to the Organised Crime Wing (OCW) in the CCB were suspended for dereliction of duty since they had not followed the directions of DCP Crime-1 S Girish, police sources, however, say the action is linked to a bribery case.

They say the two were accused of taking a bribe of Rs 35 lakh from a Jayanagar-based chit fund company. Police sources said incident dates back to December 9, 2018, when the duo demanded Rs 1 crore bribe from the company.

The CCB had received complaints that a company named Perkz Aimms Ventures Ltd had cheated hundreds of investors of crores of rupees. Based on the complaints, Prakash and Sathish visited the company’s office and arrested five senior employees, including Pasha Mohammed Mudassir and Shahid Mohammed.

Prakash and Sathish found incriminating evidence against Mudassir and decided to extort money from him. They demanded Rs 1 crore from him and initially took Rs 35 lakh. When a senior police officer questioned Prakash and Sathish why they had not conducted inquiries on Mudassir, the bribery came to light. Mudassir too told senior officers that he had offered Rs 35 lakh to Prakash and Sathish.
