Day before wedding, retd IG’s daughter kills herself

Daughter of a retired IPS officer on Sunday committed suicide by jumping off the terrace from her 14th-floor residence here in the state capital.

The victim, a doctor, was engaged to an IAS officer on Saturday and was slated to tie the nuptial knot on Monday.

Snigdha is the daughter of retired Inspector General (IG) of Police Umashankar Sudhanshu and was supposed to marry the Kishanganj District Magistrate. Having completed her MBBS from Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Snigdha was pursuing her post-graduation from Kolkata.

On Sunday, she came to her residence at Udaygiri Apartment, opposite Patna Museum, with her driver and a small table. Within minutes, she jumped off from the high-rise building in the posh locality. There was no one in the house when the incident took place.

The guard informed the police. Senior SP (SSP) of Patna Manu Maharaj said that prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide. “However, we have not been able to speak to her family members as everyone is in a state of shock,” said the SSP.

Sources said the incident could be fallout of a failed affair as she was believed to be in relationship with a fellow doctor.

“It will be too early to comment as no suicide note has been found. But we have recovered a mobile. The cops and the FSL team are investigating the case from all the angles,” said the SSP.
