Defections cause worry in BJP in MP

Last Updated 03 October 2018, 19:21 IST

Ahead of BJP president Amit Shah’s scheduled Madhya Pradesh election tour from October 6, the party’s state leadership has deliberated on how to keep its flock together.

About a dozen BJP leaders, including two of state minister rank, have quit the BJP. Some of them have defected to the Congress, while others have joined the upper caste-based new political outfit the SAPAKS Samaj Party (SSP).

The latest to quit the BJP is Namdeo Tyagi alias Computer Baba. He announced resignation from the BJP on Monday and vowed to start a campaign to oust the “anti-Hindu religion” Shivraj Singh government. He was made a member of a committee for conservation of Narmada river and accorded a minister of state status in April this year. Computer Baba’s nomination had come close on the heel of his threat to launch an agitation against the BJP government’s alleged corruption in the works of Narmada river conservation.

In the Gwalior-Chambal region, more than 100 party workers quit the BJP against the decision to amend the SC/ST Act. In Sheopur, district treasurer Naresh Jindal resigned, while in Hoshangabad two-time district president Raghunandan Sharma left the BJP on the same grounds.

Recently, former MLA from Katni, Sunil Mishra, and chairperson of MP social welfare board having status of a cabinet minister, Padma Shukla, also resigned from the primary membership of the BJP alleging nepotism and injustice.

Former minister and scion of the erstwhile princely state of Rewa, Pushpraj Singh, joined Congress under the influence of Kamal Nath last week.

A meeting of state election management committee took stock of the situation arising from the resignations. Senior party leaders, including state president Rakesh Singh and state incharge Vinay Sahastrabuddhe, discussed this issue among other poll-related subjects on Tuesday too. They decided to reach out to disgruntled leaders before the visit of Amit Shah.
