In an ongoing investigation of a case concerning alleged illegal cross-border cattle trade, the CBI has traced and frozen fixed deposits worth around Rs 16.97 crore. The deposits are in the name of Trinamool leader Anubrata Mondal and his family members.

Mondal, Trinamool’s Birbhum district chief, considered a political strongman, was arrested by the investigation agency on Thursday, last week. He had been consistently avoiding the agency’s summons. A CBI court had remanded him in CBI custody till August 20.

On Wednesday, the agency officials visited his Bolpur residence in Birbhum. Mondal’s daughter, at the residence, didn’t respond to the agency’s queries. The investigation is under way.
