Hindu seers hail, Muslims decry law route to Ram temple

Last Updated 09 November 2019, 03:45 IST

While Hindu seers and saints hailed the demand, Muslim leaders made it clear that they would accept only the Supreme Court's verdict in the matter.

''Mohan Bhagwat's remarks reflect the sentiment of the Hindu community...the Central Government must enact a law for construction of Ram temple,'' said Ram Janmabhoomi Trust chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das in Ayodhya.

Mahant Dharam Das, a Hindu plaintiff in the Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid Title suits, echoed the view.

Muslim leaders and clerics, however, decried Bhagwat's remarks, calling it an attempt to ''polarise'' voters when Lok Sabha polls are nearing.

''We will only accept the verdict of the Supreme Court, where the matter is pending...Any law backing construction of Ram temple is not acceptable to us,'' Iqbal Ansari, a Muslim plaintiff in the Title suits, said in Ayodhya.

Ansari charged saffron leaders with raking up the Ram temple issue when elections were nearing. ''They forget Ram and temple after the polls,'' he added.

Senior Sunni cleric and All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahali termed Bhagwat's remarks as ''politically motivated'' and said that all sides must wait for the apex court judgement.

''It is a deliberate attempt to gain political mileage ahead of polls...elections should be fought on issues and not on religious lines,'' the cleric said.

Unconstitutional

One of the lawyers for the Muslim plaintiffs, Zafaryab Jilani, said any law for construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya would be ''unconstitutional''.

''The matter is pending in the Supreme Court...no one can make such remarks...no legislation can be enacted in this respect....such remarks are part of a well- planned strategy to create a favourable political atmosphere,'' Jilani charged.
