From manifesto to bike rallies, BJP names 17 committees

Gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections, BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday tasked Home Minister Rajnath Singh with drafting the party's manifesto, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with publicity, and named 15 other committees for handling social media to carrying out bike rallies as part of the poll campaign.

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has been put in-charge of reaching out to social and volunteer organisations, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has been tasked with producing the campaign literature and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will helm the media committee.

Senior BJP leader Saroj Pandey will lead the committee that will reach out to the beneficiaries of the various government schemes, and HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has been given charge of organising conferences of intellectuals to help the party effort.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane has been rehabilitated in the party by making him a member of the manifesto committee. Rane had quit the Congress to join the BJP, which made him a Rajya Sabha member.

Others in the manifesto committee include Jaitley, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, senior leaders Ram Madhav and Bhupendra Yadav.

Senior leader Shyam Jaju will head the social media committee, which has BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, Vijai Chauthaiwale, and 10 other members.

Rajya Sabha member Bhupendra Yadav will head the committee that would handle matters pertaining to the Election Commission.

BJP leaders Sanjiv Chaurasiya, Pradeep Singh Baghela and Saurabh Chaudhari have been tasked with organising bike rallies for the election campaign.

Senior leaders such as Prakash Javadekar, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Kalraj Mishra, Sadanand Gowda, S S Ahluwalia, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Arun Singh, Anil Jain, Bandaru Dattatreya and Rajeev Chandrashekhar have been made members of different committees.

The Lok Sabha polls are expected to be held in April-May with the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking another term.
