AIR has huge reach, says Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he chose All India Radio to hold his 'Mann ki Baat' programme every month soon after coming at the helm of affairs at the Centre because it was a "mighty means” of getting across the masses.

Holding the 50th episode of his monthly radio talk on Sunday, he said this “golden jubilee” episode was “indeed gilt-edged in every sense of the term.”

He, however, rejected the “apprehensions” of his critics that he held his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme every month to carry forward his political agenda by highlighting the achievements of his government.

“When Mann Ki Baat’ commenced, I had firmly decided that it would carry nothing political, or any praise for the government, nor Modi for that matter anywhere. Mann Ki Baat addresses an aspirational India, an ambitious India,” he said

Modi was responding to a question from a listener Shalini from Hyderabad who wanted to know from him if he ever had thought of using the platform for political purpose.

“Your apprehension is not misplaced. The fact is, if a leader gets hold of a microphone with assured listeners to the tune of millions, what else does he need? Significantly, some young friends have attempted a study on the myriad subjects touched upon, over the many episodes of Mann Ki Baat. One of their findings was that, this programme has remained apolitical,” he said.

Underlining the popularity of his radio programme, the prime minister said it promoted "many a mass revolution."

“Most people believe that the greatest contribution of the Mann Ki Baat has been the enhancement of a feeling of positivity in our society,” he said.
