JOIN USMadhya Pradesh and Mizoram, which went to polls on Wednesday, registered a high turnout. In fact, the turnout in Mizoram was 80% according to the latest updates, with 56.46% registered at Kahnmun village in South Mizoram, where Bru refugees cast their votes till 8 pm.
In Madhya Pradesh, over 75% of the total 5.47 crore voters exercised their franchise to elect 230 candidates for the state Assembly in a largely peaceful polling on Wednesday.
This is around 3% more than the 72.66% voting recorded in the 2013 Assembly elections.
Till 6 pm, the polling was 74.61% which could cross 76%, according to state chief election officer V Kantarao. Rural Madhya Pradesh recorded more voting than urban areas, which, political observers say, is not a good indication for the ruling party.
Of the total 230 seats, rural areas account for 170 seats in the state.
In Mizoram too, the voting was completely peaceful, which is rare in the Northeast. Civil society organisations worked hand-in-hand with the Election Commission, which was described by chief electoral officer, Mizoram, Ashish Kundra, as “a unique case of partnership” for free and fair polls.
