'No India if my family wanted to break it'

Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “tyrannical ruler” regional National Conference leader and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah Monday said if his family wanted to break India, “there would have been no India.”

“Even if Modi tries his best, he will not be able to break India. I want to tell him from here today that you will break, but India will not. You accuse the Abdullahs of trying to break India, if we wanted to break India, there would have been no India then,” he said while addressing an election rally at Sher-e-Kashmir park, near city center Lal Chowk, here.

Abdullah was responding to Modi Sunday speech where he accused Abdullahs and Muftis were trying to break the country, saying the two families “ruined” three generations of Jammu and Kashmir and he will not allow them to “divide” India.

Hitting back at the prime minister, the NC chief said, “Modi should remember that it was him (Abdullah) who held the country's flag when no one wanted to fight elections in the state in 1996. There was no one here then, but now you scream.”

Two days back, Abdullah had alleged Modi was behaving like German dictator Adolf Hitler.

Referring to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's statement that the Centre would make a stronger sedition law, the former CM said, “We will see what you will do” but Modi and the BJP cannot win the hearts of Kashmiris.

“Modi has been parroting that Kashmir is the ‘Atoot Ang’ (integral part) of the country, then why didn’t he address any public meet here in Kashmir? What barred him from doing that?” Abdullah asked.

“On one hand, he parrots about winning hearts and minds of Kashmiri, but there is a world of difference between his actions and statements. How can the heart be won by banning highways? This is not the way to won hearts,” he added

Abdullah, also a three-time former CM of J&K, alleged that Modi and BJP president Amit Shah were “destroying” the country. “Which leader fought the British when General Dyer killed people at Jalianwala Bagh? He was Saifuddin Kitchloo, a Kashmiri from Baramulla. And hundreds of those killed there were from Kashmir,” he said.
