Huawei 5G trials: Security issues will be examined

Last Updated 23 March 2019, 15:52 IST

The Department of Telecom (DoT) will examine all security related issues before allowing Chinese gear markers to take part in 5G trials in India.

With the apprehension expressed by various countries over the Chinese telecom gear, the government has decided to examine the security related issue first, a senior official in the Department of Telecom told DH.

Chinese telecom major Huawei had earlier applied to the government seeking its approval to participate in the 5G trials.

The DoT has set up a panel, which is looking into the duration, quantum of spectrum and locations and other parameters, for 5G trials, said the official.

Earlier Huawei came under global security scrutiny after the US raised security concerns regarding 5G equipment, given their proximity to the Chinese government.

Even the US had asked its partner countries to ban 5G gear from Huawei.

However, the company called upon India to have its own judgement.

Recently Indian telecom companies held meeting with their counterparts in other countries and discussed the data security threat from Chinese companies.

With the DoT working on preparing documents on notice inviting applications, allocation of 5G spectrum is expected to start in June-July this year, the official said.
