Poll results show BJP losing influence: Rajinikanth

Last Updated 14 December 2018, 14:35 IST

The results of the elections to five state Assemblies show that the BJP is losing its influence among the people, Tamil superstar and wannabe politician Rajinikanth said on Tuesday, in a politically-significant statement, given his proximity to the saffron party.

“The results clearly show that the BJP is losing its influence among people,” the actor told reporters at the airport here when asked to comment on the state Assembly elections. The Congress is set to form governments in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

“Definitely, it is a huge setback for the BJP,” he added. Rajinikanth’s statement is very significant since this is the first time that the actor has come out against the BJP after he made his intention to enter politics last year.

Though it would be premature to conclude anything from one statement, political eyebrows rose on Tuesday after Rajinikanth said the results showed the BJP was losing its influence. Just a month ago, the superstar had mocked the efforts by Opposition parties to form an alliance to take on Modi, and had supported the police during the Tuticorin firing in May.

The BJP is banking on Rajinikanth to make inroads in Tamil Nadu, where it has failed to make any impact so far, and is said to be in talks with him for an alliance during the Lok Sabha polls, as the actor has made it clear that he will only contest the Assembly elections.

Separately, Rajinikanth’s friend Kamal Haasan, who has launched his political party, tweeted that the results were the indication of a new beginning. “It is people’s verdict,” he said.

Stalin congratulates Rahul

DMK president M K Stalin on Tuesday congratulated his Congress counterpart Rahul Gandhi on the party’s victory in Assembly elections, saying it will “reinforce our fight against the fascist BJP regime” and help in strengthening the grand alliance.

“I congratulate Thiru @RahulGandhi and the @INCIndia party for the excellent performance in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan & MP. These results will reinforce our fight against the fascist BJP regime and help in strengthening the grand alliance,” Stalin said in a tweet.

The DMK president had met Rahul on Sunday and had vowed to strengthen the alliance to take on the BJP.

Stalin also sent his wishes to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. “Many congratulations to Thiru K Chandrasekhar Rao @trspartyonline on his victory in the #TelanganaElections2018,” Stalin said.
