Kerala: Kin of Latvian raped & killed seek justice

Last Updated 15 March 2019, 12:34 IST

Sister of a Latvian national raped and murdered near Kovalam tourist spot in Kerala last year is pleading for speedy justice.

The rape and murder of the foreign tourist near the internationally famed tourist spot had caused much damage to Kerala tourism. The State Government, however, acted proactively and ensured proper investigation and also gave moral support to the victim's sister.

Ilze Skromane, sister of the victim, wrote to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan the other day urging that a special court may be set up for speeding up the case. She expressed apprehensions that owing to the delay in the case the two accused who brutally killed her sister were walking around freely.

"My sister went missing from Thiruvananthapuram on 2018 March 14. It is exactly one year now. Those who killed my sister are walking scot-free," Ilze said in an email message.

Police sources said that there was no laxity on their part. The chargesheet could not be filed within 90 days as the partner of the deceased approached the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the incident and the case files were with the high court till the 90th day of the arrest of the accused. Hence the two accused, both locals with shady history, managed to get bail.

The additional director general of police Mr. Manoj Abraham, who has been directly supervising the case, said that the chargesheet was filed within days after the documents were received from the high court. The government even appointed a special prosecutor for the case. The trial is also expected to begin soon.

The 33-year old victim's decomposed body was found at an isolated area at Panathura near Kovalam beach on April 21, 2019.
