Sonia unveils Karuna statue; Oppn leaders present

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday unveiled a bronze statue of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here in the presence of leaders from various Opposition parties that are trying to cobble up a United front against Narendra Modi.

Gandhi along with her son and Congress President Rahul Gandhi shared the stage with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Kerala Chief Minister Pinnarayi Vijayan at the DMK headquarters.

Leaders from various political parties, including BJP rebel Shatrughan Sinha, CPI's D Raja and Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, are some of the prominent faces in the audience. The DMK, which has confirmed it's an alliance with the Congress for the 2019 elections, wanted to show a message of unity among the Opposition and made this event to drive home the point from Chennai.

With a popular song penned by Karunanidhi on Tamil language being played in the backdrop, Sonia Gandhi unveiled the bronze statue inside the DMK headquarters. As the leaders left the dais, an enthusiastic Rahul Gandhi was seen clicking pictures of the statue on his mobile phone.

The leaders will address a mega public meeting in the evening.
