Still time to defeat Modi-Shah: AAP to Congress

Last Updated 06 May 2019, 04:00 IST

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday indicated that they are yet to close the doors on Congress on an alliance, with Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia saying that BJP can be defeated if the Congress wants it.

Even as AAP inked a coalition deal with Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in Haryana after the Congress party made it clear that its alliance in Delhi cannot be extended to other states, Sisodia said that if Congress wanted, there was a possibility of defeating the duo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.

"There is still time to defeat Modi-Shah in 18 seats (Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh), if Congress wants it. It is for Congress to decide that this time whether the priority is to defeat Modi-Shah, or to make a record of fighting more seats," Sisodia tweeted.

The tone of the tweet showed that AAP is yet to give up the demand of three seats in Haryana if Congress wants an alliance in Delhi. However, it also showed that the AAP had not gone aggressive against Congress, which has ruled out any deal in Haryana or other states.

The Congress had on Thursday finalised four candidates for Delhi — Kapil Sibal (Chandni Chowk), Ajay Maken (New Delhi), Rajkumar Chouhan (North-West) and J P Agarwal (North-East) — while leaving a decision on the rest three.

Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit, who has been asked to contest East Delhi while Mahabal Mishra is considered for West Delhi and Olympian Sushil Kumar or controversial Congress leader Sajjan Kumar's brother Ramesh Kumar are being considered for South Delhi seat.

The Congress did not officially announce its list while party leaders have not closed the chapter on alliance in Delhi. However, some leaders insist that it is not in a position to give any seats for AAP, which has already aligned with JJP.

Many see the Congress' decision on candidates as a pressure tactics on AAP to fall in line. Last Wednesday, senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, the lead negotiator from the AAP side, had said the Congress was not in favour of an alliance and his party would contest all seats in Delhi.

The notification for the May 12 polls in Delhi will be issued on next Tuesday and the last date of nominations is April 23.
