Defence land for permanent campus of three KVs

The Centre has approved transfer of defence land to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) on long-term lease for construction of permanent campus of three Kendriya Vidyalayas—one each in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir; Delhi cantonment area and the Jalandhar cantonment.

A decision was taken in this regard at a meeting of the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the meeting.

“The Union Cabinet has approved the transfer of 56 kanals and 19 marlas (7.118 acre) of Defence land on lease, on long term basis for 30 years renewable for two like terms of 30 years each to Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) for construction of KendriyaVidyalaya No. 2 at Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir at a nominal rent of one rupee per annum,” the government said in a statement after the meeting.

The school at Udhampur has been functioning from a temporary campus on Dhar Road since its establishment in 1985. A total of 851 students are studying in this school.

For the construction of a permanent campus of Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi cantonment area, the Cabinet approved transfer of 4 acre of defence land “in perpetuity basis” to the KVS at a nominal rent of one rupee per annum

The Cabinet approved the transfer of 7.5 acre of defence land on lease in perpetuity basis at a nominal rent of one rupee per annum to the KVS for construction of a permanent campus of Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jalandhar cantonment.

While the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi Cantonment area has currently been functioning from a temporary “re-appropriated building” since its establishment in 1994, the central government run school, set up in 1987 in Jalandhar cantonment area, has also been operating from a temporary “re-appropriated” building of the Military Engineering Service.

“Construction of own permanent school building by KVS will enable the school authorities to build optimal infrastructure to meet the educational requirements of the children of serving personnel,” the government said.
