Vehicles owners can carry electronic format of papers

Vehicle owners need not carry physical copies of driving licence (DL) or registration certificate as the government has officially amended a rule allowing the public to carry electronic copies of these documents.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended rule 139 of Central Motor Vehicles Act 1989.

“As per the amended provision, the citizen can produce the transport related documents such as registration, insurance, fitness and permit, the driving licence, certificate for pollution under check and any other relevant documents, if required, in physical or electronic form of on demand by any police officer in uniform or any other authorised by the state government in this behalf,” said the circular issued by the ministry.

The latest notification aimed at enabling the use of digital platforms for carrying essential documents such as driving licence and registration certificates while travelling.

Those who want to store their driving licence or registration documents can install the Digilocker app from either Google Play store or iOS App Store and sign into the application using an OTP based verification.

On the application interface, you can upload and store a picture of your licence or registration certificate for purpose of verification.

Though earlier the government had allowed the citizens to have the option to carry electronic format of either DL and other documents under the Information Technology Act, now the Transport Ministry amended Motor Vehicle Act and made similar provision.
