Legislature session in Nagpur after several decades

After a gap of several decades, the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature would be held in Nagpur, often referred to as the winter capital of Maharashtra.

The monsoon session commences on Wednesday in Nagpur, also known as the Orange City.

Since the formation of Maharashtra in 1960, 54 legislature sessions had been held in Nagpur of which monsoon sessions were conducted twice, in 1961 and 1971.

Traditionally, the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature is held in Nagpur.

Last month, Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao convened the monsoon session from 4 July.

The government has decided to shift the monsoon session as the MLA Hostel at the Nariman Point is undergoing repairs.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had in April formed a committee to look into the issue and come out with a report.

Accordingly, a committee comprising of Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister for Finance, Planning, and Forests; Girish Bapat, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs; and Subhash Desai, Minister for Industries, discussed the issue and recommended the session to be held in Nagpur.

As per the Nagpur Pact, which was concluded in September 1953, the government has to hold the winter session at Nagpur, but the budget and monsoon sessions are held in Mumbai.
