Last Updated 04 May 2019, 08:50 IST

Nothing is more refreshing in the summer heat than a cold glass of nimboo pani. But even this classic drink can become old and boring. To spice up this recipe, here are some ingredients you can add to your standard lime juice, giving the drink a new, healthier twist as none of these recipes call for refined sugar.

Heath benefits of drinking lime juice:
1. The citric acid in lime boosts metabolism and promotes weight loss.

2. Vitamin C in lime is believed to aid in lowering blood sugar levels.

3. Vitamin C is also known to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

4. Lime is rich in potassium, which can reduce blood pressure.

5. Lime contains pectin, a substance which can lower cholesterol levels.

6. Citric acid may also prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Nimboo pani recipes with:

1. Watermelon
Six cups of cubed watermelon need to be blended, strained, and mixed into a liter of water with a cup of lime juice to create a rejuvenating lime-based drink. This does not even require any additional sweetener because of the high natural sugar content of watermelon.

2. Ginger
Peel and chop one piece of ginger and blend together with one cup of lime juice. Heat 1/3 cup of honey (or more if desired) in 1 cup of water until dissolved, and let cool. Add the ginger-lime mixture and the honey syrup to one liter of chilled water, garnish with sliced lime and serve.

3. Cucumber
Slice one large cucumber and set aside a few slices for garnish. Blend together the cucumber with one cup of lime juice, one cup of water and the desired amount of honey. Once completely blended, strain the mixture and add 3-4 cups of water, depending on how strong you want it, garnish with cucumber slices and your drink is ready to be served.

4. Jalapeno, basil and mint
Heat 1/2 a cup of honey with 1 cup of water to make a syrup. Finely chop a handful each of basil and mint leaves and add, along with the syrup, to a litre of water and a cup of lime juice. Add 5-6 slices of jalapeno and let it infuse overnight. Remove the jalapeno and serve.

5. Strawberry
Blend two cups of strawberries with one cup of water until smooth. Add this mixture to one liter of water and two cups of lime juice and chill. Garnish with chopped strawberries and lime. Add a handful of mint leaves when pureeing the strawberries to make the drink more freshening. The tart taste of the strawberries relieves the drink from the need of other sweeteners.
