JOIN USUdanta Singh has progressed by leaps and bounds this season.
The winger delivered for Bengaluru FC at a time when star forward Miku was out injured and skipper Sunil Chhetri was struggling for form, playing a key role in propelling Carles Cuadrat's side to the final of the Indian Super League (ISL) for the second straight time.
"We promised our fans that we'd reach the final and I am happy that we kept it," said Udanta, who seemed pleased with the return of five goals and three assists so far this campaign. "It's just hard work. Thankfully I am getting amongst the goals. I am happy. This season I am taking more shots as compared to the last. If I get a chance I take it. Last season, I couldn't score as I was more into setting up goals," he added.
The 22-year-old came up with those strikes in crunch situations to keep BFC atop the table during the league stage. "As a right-winger, I just wanted to provide assists, I didn't try shooting last season. This time I made the decision to shoot more," he said.
Another noticeable development is Udanta's pace, which he uses as a weapon to beat his markers. "I enjoy the pace. Everybody knows about it and wants to stop me but I have confidence in my abilities," said the winger.
The Manipuri forms part of the attacking trio that has dominated the opposition defenders. He feels it is down to the understanding that he has with his more illustrious team-mates Sunil Chhetri and Miku. "It has been a good season for me and for the team. Playing along with them is a pleasure. On the field, I listen to them. I have to do the best for them and work harder," said Udanta.
As BFC prepares to face FC Goa - an opponent they have already beaten twice this campaign -- on Sunday, Udanta is keen to not let the opportunity pass by this time around. "We should not be overconfident against them. We'll find out their weakness and plan accordingly. It is going to be a midfield game and we are looking forward to it," said Udanta.
Touted to be the next big thing in Indian football, Udanta, like every other Indian player, idolises Chhetri. "It's not easy to match up to him. He is an inspiration to all the football players in India. I want to be the best. But according to me, Sunil bhai is the best. In this country, he is number one," he said.
He also had praise for his team-mate Miku. "He is the best foreigner in the league. He is a cool and calm guy. He keeps telling me that I can do it and motivates me," said Udanta.
