Veteren entrepreneur of information technology sector Nandan Nelekani has dispatched a team of experts to redesign the BBMP software for allocating beds to Covid-19 patients, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya said even as the civic body began a crackdown on errant staffers and officials involved in the alleged scam.

Surya said Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, had dispatched a team of software architects to redesign the BBMP bed allocation software. “The team will redesign the bed booking software to make it efficient, transparent, and minimise manual intervention,” he said.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta, who ordered an investigation into the scam alleged by the MP, welcomed the move.

The BBMP is investigating 12 individual cases in detail. “Along with the individual cases, we are also collecting logs and other information, to determine those involved in the malpractice,” said BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta. We will analyse these to determine how many of them were bonafide cases and which were not, he said. He added that a preliminary report would be ready soon.

Meanwhile, the redesigning of the software will be complemented by changes on the ground. At the management level, every BBMP war room will now be managed by a government official along with a KAS officer. The officials will supervise the process and prevent the entry of unauthorised persons into the system.

Speaking about the software, the Chief Commissioner said that as a first step, they plan to implement strict login conditions. “Authorisation will be provided to limited persons and their logins will be strictly mapped to BBMP machines. We will make sure they cannot login from any outside machines,” Gupta said.

“We will improve the software to make it robust and transparent. If need be, we will implement a new software,” he added.

According to a senior BBMP official, the civic body is also planning on changing the agency which was roped in to run the bed allocation and war room activities.
