Last Updated 19 April 2019, 19:18 IST

An impressive voter turnout of 68.8% in Thursday’s first phase of polling for the 14 Lok Sabha segments has set off speculation on what it could mean with the Congress-JD(S) combine and the BJP making their own interpretations.

According to polling figures shared by the office of the chief electoral officer on Friday, the high-profile Mandya Lok Sabha constituency saw a record voter turnout of 80.24%. Here, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil was locked in an intense fight against Independent candidate Sumalatha, the wife of the late actor
M H Ambareesh.

“Higher polling percentage in Mandya is an indication that Nikhil will win,” Kumaraswamy told reporters in Hubballi.

Dakshina Kannada had the second-highest voter turnout at 77.9% followed by Tumkur (77.17%) and Hassan (77.08), according to data.

The polling percentage in Bengaluru across its three Lok Sabha segments — Bangalore North, Bangalore Central and Bangalore South — was 54.16%. The lowest turnout was in Bangalore South, considered to be a BJP stronghold, at 53.48%.
