‘Youth can imbibe values from Vinaya Hegde’s life’

Nitte Vinaya Hegde was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. However, he converted it into a golden spoon with his vision, hard work and commitment, said Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangaluru, President Jithakamananda.

He was speaking after releasing ‘Man Amongst All Men: Nitte Vinaya Hegde - A Tribute’, a biography of Nitte (Deemed to be university) Chancellor N Vinaya Hegde, authored by Prof M Shantharam Shetty in the city on Sunday.

“Youth of today have a lot of values to imbibe from the life of Hegde. After coming across a lot of ups and downs in his life, Hegde excelled in the fields of entrepreneurship and education. But, his humility and social concern are the underlying factors above all. He is a God’s gift to the district,” Jitakamanandaji said.

AIMIT Director Fr Denzil Lobo said that Hegde’s special quality was to take everybody along with him in the path of progress. Working in coordination with people, he contributed immensely to the education field.

Speaking on the occasion, Nitte Vinaya Hegde said that despite being a son of Supreme Court Judge, he started out his career in a humble way. He said his challenging life made him think out of the box.

He said working in Canara Workshop of V S Kudva for a monthly salary of Rs 150, he had learnt the basics of entrepreneurship. “With the support of my family, I established my own company and later, went on to establish educational institutions.”

Vinaya Hegde attributed his success to his team and family.

The incident coincided with the birthday celebrations of N Vinaya Hegde and Prof Shantaram Shetty. Hegde turned 80 on April 3.

About the book

The book ‘Man amongst all men: Nitte Vinaya Hegde: A Tribute’ is authored and published by Nitte (Deemed to be university) Pro Chancellor Prof Shantaram Shetty.

The 124-page biography contains nine chapters which speaks about Hegde’s early life, education, family, love for sports, social work, his interesting journey in the field of entrepreneurship and education and impressions from close relatives and friends.

Forward is written by Central University of Karnataka Chancellor Prof N R Shetty and Penn State Harrisburg, USA, former chancellor Dr Mukund S Kulkarni.

The book is priced at Rs 299. The proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated for Renal dialysis of the poor patients.

Tejaswini Hospital Managing Director Dr Ajith Kumar, Central University of Karnataka Chancellor Dr N R Shetty, eldest of Nitteguttu family Dr N Dineshchandra Hegde, Vinaya Hegde’s spouse Sujatha Hegde and Prof Shantaram Shetty’s spouse Vasanthi Shetty were present.

Hegde 'failed' to succeed in life

An interesting incident which is termed to be the turning point in the life of N Vinaya Hegde is narrated in the book.

While studying BSc in the erstwhile Central College, Bengaluru, Vinaya had secured 17 marks in Chemistry in final exam and was declared as failed.

Greatly disappointed, Vinaya vowed that he would not appear for the supplementary examination and returned to Mangaluru to join V S Kudva's Canara workshop. But, after two months, at the behest of Vinaya's mother, his father Justice K S Hegde requested for a retotalling of Vinaya's marks in Chemistry.

To the family's dismay, the marks Vinaya scored in Chemistry turned out to be 77 instead of 17 and was declared passed by the University.

However, Vinaya by then had decided to continue with his job and did not turn back.
