Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said nine teams would be formed to look into incidents of traffic violations from April 9 for a period of one month. She was speaking at Udupi District Road Safety Committee meeting held at DC Office on Thursday.

“Camps will also be conducted to create awareness on the different traffic violations.” The wearing of seat belts and helmets will be made mandatory and travelling by public transport like buses and bicycles will be encouraged, she said.

Korlapati observed that the CCTV cameras were not functioning properly at many places. The CCTV cameras should be made functional, she said and added that departments that installed CCTV cameras should be held accountable.

Korlapati urged police to take immediate steps to set right the problem of overcrowding in school buses.

The deputy commissioner said that an amount of Rs 3 lakh from the road safety committee could be used for installing reflectors and barricades.

The deputy commissioner sought stringent measures to check road accidents on the national highway. The interceptors should be deployed to track speeding vehicles.

Udupi Traffic Sub Inspector Nityananda Gowda said that a lack of space at Padubidri Junction hindered vehicular movement.

He blamed the absence of streetlights at 27 places for the rise in the number of accidents. Committee Member Secretary R M Varnekar said that the accidents should be studied scientifically in order to understand the factors that caused them.
