The breach of security, which could lead to terror attacks, was witnessed at both entry points of Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj of NDLS. While policemen are generally active ensuring all passengers get their baggage checked by scanners, Deccan Herald found porters carrying loads of luggage — in some cases 20-25 suitcases and bags — on trolleys without the mandatory check.
When this reporter sought the service of a porter, with a rider that he would not want his luggage put through scanners, the porter was quick to concede to the request on payment of Rs 200.
“You will just have to pay extra for it,” replied the porter, explaining that he would charge Rs 150-200 extra “with a cut for the cops”.
At the Ajmeri Gate side, rules are being flouted regularly at the entry point next to the VVIP parking which takes passengers directly to platform 16. The number of such trolleys bypassing the usual drill increases with the rush, thus providing room for anti-socials to take advantage of the situation.
When asked about the lapse, Ashwani Lohani, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Delhi, said: “We will look into the lapse if it is happening, and make sure all luggage entering the station on trolleys are screened.”
The average footfall at NDLS is five lakh a day and it’s a challenge to monitor such a huge number, the DRM said. Security at NDLS is in the responsibility of the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
One of the entry points from where trolleys could be taken to platforms from Paharganj side is behind the NDLS police post, and beside the RPF post.
