Death toll in Satara rises to 28 with six bodies recovered at landslide site

With six bodies being recovered from the landslide-hit Mirgaon village, the death toll in rain-related incidents in Western Maharashtra's Satara district rose to 28 by late Saturday evening while at least 14 persons are still missing, an official said. As many as 379 villages in the district were affected due to heavy rains over the last three days and more than 5,000 people were shifted to safer places, as per the local administration.

The death toll from the torrential rains that battered Maharashtra's Pune and Konkan divisions over the last three days and triggered landslides in some areas rose to 112 on Saturday, including 52 in the coastal Raigad district alone, the state government said in a release. As many as 1,35,313 people have been shifted to safer places including 78,111 in Western Maharashtra's Sangli district followed by 40,882 in Kolhapur district.

Death toll from landslides, floods rises to 82

The death toll from the torrential rains that battered Maharashtra over the last three days and triggered landslides rose to 82 on Saturday including 47 in the coastal Raigad district while at least 59 persons are missing, officials said. As people in flood-hit towns such as Chiplun, Khed and Mahad struggled to come to terms with the disaster, the challenge before the administration is to restore water and electricity supply and arrange food and medicines in affected areas.

34 NDRF teams engaged in rescue operations

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has enhanced the number of its teams from 26 to 34 for undertaking rescue operations in the coastal areas of Maharashtra that have been hit by landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall.

A spokesperson for the federal contingency force said these teams are being deployed in affected areas of Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Satara, Sangli, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Pune and Nagpur for rescue and relief work after consultation with the state administration.

"In view of the severity of the situation, additional eight NDRF teams have been airlifted from Kolkata and Vadodara base which are being deployed in affected areas of Maharashtra," the spokesperson said.

13 bodies recovered from two landslide sites in Satara

As many as 13 bodies have been recovered from two landslide sites in Western Maharashtra's Satara district which was battered by torrential rains and some more people are still missing, a senior official said on Saturday evening. The number of bodies found at Ambeghar village, where four or five houses were buried under the rubble, rose to 11 and at least four persons were still missing, said district collector Shekhar Singh.

Rainfall activity to reduce over west coast during next 24 hours: IMD

The India Meteorology Department (IMD) on Saturday said rainfall intensity along the west coast is expected to decrease over the next 24 hours, in a much needed relief to rain-battered Maharashtra and Goa.

Rainfall activity will increase over the north Indian plains and hills from July 25, it said.

"Further reduction in rainfall intensity is very likely along the west coast, including Konkan, Goa and adjoining interior Maharashtra, during the next 24 hours," the IMD said.

CM Uddhav Thackeray visited the village of Taliye in Mahad taluka. He inspected the area affected by the floods.

90,000 people evacuated from Western Maharashtra

Large stretches in the Western Maharashtra districts of Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara remained under floodwaters, putting people on the edge even as multi-agency rescue and relief operations were under way.

The road traffic between Maharashtra and neighbouring Karnataka hasbeen badly affected because of the flooding in the three districts.

During the last four days, more than 90,000 people have been evacuated from flood-affected areas of the state and shifted to safer locations.

Traffic on South Western Railway remains affected for second day due to landslides, derailment

Traffic on the South Western Railway (SWR) route continues to remain affected for the second consecutive day on Saturday, a day after two landslides occurred on the Goa-Karnataka border besides the derailment of a train in the section, an official said. (PTI)

Torrential downpours have lashed India's western coast in recent days, leaving dozens missing near the commercial capital Mumbai and precipitating the worst floods in decades in the resort state of Goa.

"Rainfall in various parts of the state often coinciding with high tides and also discharge from dams led to various regions... getting inundated," the Maharashtra government said in a press release.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, issued two red alerts of heavy to very heavy rainfall for isolated places in eastern and western parts of Madya Pradesh.

It issued a red alert for six districts of Maharashtra too, forecasting "extremely heavy" rainfall and recommending preventive actions. The alert was issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in coastal Konkan and also for Pune, Satara and Kolhapur in western Maharashtra. (PTI)

The Maharashtra government announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the kin of people who have died in landslides triggered by heavy rains in different parts of the state. The injured will be treated in hospitals at the government's expense, it said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in Raigad district and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. The situation is being closely monitored, he said. (PTI)

The Panchganga river near Kolhapur city was flowing at a level higher than that witnessed during the peak of floods in 2019, officials told PTI. Besides Pune and Kolhapur, the division also includes the districts of Sangli and Satara.

Extremely heavy rain forecast in Satara; many missing after landslides

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday evening issued a fresh 'red alert' for Satara, forecasting "extremely heavy rainfall" in the next 24 hours in the hilly `ghat' areas of this Western Maharashtra district where some 30 persons are missing after landslides.

The Met department also issued `orange alert' for Pune and Kolhapur districts. The region is being battered by incessant rains for the last two days. Extremely heavy rainfall was likely to occur at isolated places in the ghat sections of the Satara district, the IMD said.

Army deploys 15 teams in Maharashtra for flood relief

With heavy rains wreaking havoc in Maharashtra, the Indian Army has mobilized its teams to assist the local administration in flood-affected areas, it said on Friday.

A total of 15 relief and rescue teams comprising troops from the Aundh Military Station and Bombay Engineer Group based at Pune have been deployed in affected areas, a Defense release said. The Army has launched `Operation Varsha 21' for flood relief and rescue work in the state, it said.
