The Modi Government on Wednesday set in motion the process to repeal the three farm laws as the Union Cabinet approved a draft legislation to the effect for introduction in the Parliament next week.

The government went into an overdrive to communicate the decision with Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar saying the promptness in taking steps to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to repeal the three laws reflected uniformity in “words and actions”.

“The Cabinet has completed the formalities to repeal the three farm laws. ...In the upcoming session of the Parliament, it will be our priority to take back these three laws,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters.

Government is set to introduce The Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021 in the Winter Session of the Parliament beginning next week to repeal the three laws – Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.

A worry for the government is that farmers have refused to call off their year-long protests on the borders of the national capital even after the Prime Minister's surprise announcement to repeal the three laws on Friday.

The government would be anxiously watching the next move of the protesting farmers once the Bill to repeal the three farm laws are passed by both the Houses of Parliament.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the umbrella organisation spearheading the protests against the three laws, had asked the government to resume talks with them on six other demands, including a legal cover for MSP and withdrawal of cases filed against farmers during the course of the year-long agitation.

They have also sought removal of penal provisions on farmers in the 'Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Act 2021' and shelving the amendments to the Electricity Act.
