Cyclone Fani: Vodafone, Airtel offer free SMS and more

On Friday, category 4 cyclone Fani made landfall with a staggering wind speed up to 180 kmph leaving largescale destruction in its path in Odisha coast. Despite government making efforts in evacuating more than one million people, 16 got killed in seperate incidents across the eastern state of India.

To ensure seamless network connectivity, Vodafone Idea and Airtel have made arrangements across their service stations. They are also offering free SMS and top-up calling packs (select recharge currencies) to their customers for next five days. With this, the cyclone Fani affected people can contact their friends and family to let them know they are safe or in need of emergency support.

“Vodafone Idea is strongly committed to provide seamless connectivity to people, especially at times of emergency. We have taken all necessary precautions to face cyclone Fani. Proactively, we have ensured sufficient fuel supply to our sites across all locations, and stocking at strategic locations, for use in times of emergency. Additionally, mobile DGs, critical equipment spares and vehicles have been arranged and kept ready at key locations," Vodafone Idea said to DH News Service.

"Vodafone Idea teams have been prepared to manage any emergency situation and network monitoring is being done through 24x7 War Rooms set up at VIL (Vodafone Idea Ltd) and vendor offices," the company added.

Both Airtel, Vodafone are working with other service providers for ICR (Intra Circle Roaming), partners and government agencies to ensure stable telecom connectivity during the cyclone to let people stay connected with their loved ones.

"Advanced fuel filling done at all sites to ensure connectivity and maximum network uptime. Additional resources planned for affected clusters including manpower for network operations, equipment, fuel and vehicles," Airtel spokesperson said to DH News Service.

In case of emergency, customers can dial 1938 to get immediate assistance.
