A state-level volleyball player died after collapsing on the court during a local volleyball tournament at Innanje here on Saturday night.
The deceased Devaraj Anchan (33), is a resident of Kurkalu Subhash Nagar.
At around 1 am when the tournament was underway, Devaraj complained of chest pain and collapsed on the court.
The tournament organisers immediately made arrangements to shift him to a hospital in Udupi. However, Devaraj breathed his last en route to the hospital. Devaraj, who had lost his father just four months ago, was unmarried. He is survived by his mother and five sisters.
Fondly addressed as Pakki Devu, Devaraj had represented Uttara Kannada district team and several other teams in the state-level tournaments. Following the player’s death, the organisers called off the tournament mid-way.
