A 13-year-old girl committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district a few hours after she was allegedly raped by a youth from the same village. Police said an FIR has been filed with Babina police station.

The accused, Gaya Prasad Ahirwar, has been arrested and he has confessed to the crime, police said. The victim, whose father works as a labourer in Delhi, lived with her mother at Dubki village.

She used to go to a nearby village every day to  learn stitching.

When she did not return home from her stitching class till late evening on Saturday, a search was launched. But she could not be traced. She came home in the wee hours of Sunday with her clothes torn and injury marks on her face and arms, police said.

She told her mother that Prasad had forcibly taken her to his house and raped her. He allegedly threatened her if she reported the incident to anyone.

Unable to bear the humiliation, she consumed a poisonous substance, following which she was taken to hospital. She was declared brought dead by doctors.

Rape cases have suddenly increased in the state, taking police by surprise and prompting the government to issue directives to take measures for women’s safety. At a meeting of senior police officials here some days ago, the government had directed quick action in rape cases.
