14 advocates recommended for appointment as judges of Madras, Calcutta HCs

The Supreme Court Collegium led by the Chief Justice of India has recommended names of 14 advocates for appointment as judges - nine for Madras High Court and five for Calcutta High Court.

In a resolution passed on December 4, the Collegium also comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and J Chelameswar cleared the names of advocates C Emalias, P T Asha, M Nirmal Kumar, Subramonium Prasad, Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, N Anand Venkatesh, G K Ilanthiraiyan, Krishnan Ramasamy and C  Saravanan for appointment as judges of the Madras High Court.

Those who were recommended for appointment in Calcutta High Court are Shampa Sarkar, Sabyasachi Chaudhury, Ravi Krishan Kapur, Arindam Mukherjee, and Sakya Sen.

The Madras HC Collegium had sent names of 11 advocates for considerations, while the Calcutta High Court had recommended six advocates for appointment as judges. However, the SC Collegium found only 14 candidates suitable.

The warrant of appointment would be issued by the President's office after approval by the Union Government.
