1,584 men fined for travelling in Metro coaches for women

Over 1,500 men were penalised in the last three months for travelling in Delhi Metro’s coaches reserved for women, police said on Wednesday.

It is part of a Delhi Metro Rail Police initiative to stop male passengers from entering the reserved coaches and to prevent harassment of women passengers travelling in the trains, said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

They male passengers were penalised under section 64(1) of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Act 2002. They were produced before the station controller of the Metro stations who is authorised to fine them under specified provisions.

“We have been carrying out surprise checks and have penalised 1,584 male passengers for unlawful entry into coaches reserved for women from January 1 to March 4, 2012. They were fined Rs 250 each,” Gurjar added.

The special drive is led by the station house officers of the seven metro police stations in the city.

The DMRC had reserved the first coach of the moving direction of every train for women from October 2010.
