Two cheats claiming to be reporters were arrested in north-east Delhi for extorting money from a voluntary organisation, police said.
The accused have been identified as Mithun Singh Rajput, 24, of Ujwa Village in Najafgarh and Gursharan Kaur, 37, of Chhatarpur.
“They were held from west Karawal Nagar while extorting money on Friday afternoon,” said deputy commissioner of police B K Singh.
The arrests were made following a complaint by Kaushalya of west Karawal Nagar. She runs an NGO, Jeevan Anmol - Nasha Mukti Kendra.
The accused had first met Kaushalya on Thursday and demanded money from her for the smooth functioning of her organistaion. They threatened to show her organistaion in bad light in the media if she did not give them the cash. The next day, they came again after finalising the deal for Rs 50,000.
Kaushalya told police that two people claiming to be crime reporters of Aaj Tak came to her office on Friday afternoon and demanded cash. “Kaushalya handed over Rs 10,000 to Rajput, but they demanded Rs 30,000 more. On this, she gave us a call,” said Singh.
A police team reached the spot, apprehended the accused and recovered the extorted money. They accepted their guilt. They used to extort with other people too in the area in similarway, said Singh.
