2 sandalwood smugglers held, Chinese man goes missing

Two men have been arrested with 487 kilos white sandalwood brought to Delhi from Himachal Pradesh. It is worth Rs 1.25 crore in the international market. A Chinese managed to escape, police said on Thursday.


On Wednesday, Kotwali police station had laid a trap near Old Delhi railway station. It led to the arrest of Birbal Yadav, 32, and his younger brother Jitender, 26, residents of Baljeet Nagar in west Delhi’s Patel Nagar.

“The two men revealed that they planned to settle a deal with some Chinese smugglers. The seized sandalwood was recovered from their house,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

A case under Indian Penal Code and Indian Forest Act has been registered with Kotwali police station.

“Efforts were made to apprehend the Chinese smuggler and raid was conducted at a hotel in Majnu ka Tilla. The details of his passport was obtained from the hotel,” Verma added.
