Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro on Tuesday assured the Punjab government of starting the first unit of 700 MW Rajpura thermal power plant by December this year.

Larsen & Toubro executive vice president S N Roy called on chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and apprised him of latest progress about the project, an official release said.

He urged the chief minister to provide help in acquiring nearly 25 acre of land for the construction of a new road from NH-1 to the site via Sarai Banjara-Chandumajra-Chak Kalan-Chak Khurd-Sural Kalan, as the existing approach road from NH-64 could not bear the load due to heavy movement of 400 bulkers of fly ash every day.

However, Badal asked him to acquire land on his own but assuring him of all logistic support and cooperation for the construction of the road.

He also agreed to the proposal for the exemption of the peak load restrictions and weekly day offs on industrial power connection granted to L&T’s power plant at Rajpura.

The CM impressed upon Roy to execute few prestigious projects in Punjab, including the construction of three jails at a cost of Rs 450 crore, sewerage projects worth Rs 200 crore, Rs 1,452 crore project of the Sirhind canal lining besides four-laning of Zirakpur-Bathinda road at the cost of Rs 2,100 crore.
