A Delhi Police officer’s son was killed and his five friends were injured after their SUV rammed a road divider near Ashok Vihar police station in north-west Delhi on Wednesday night, police said.

Vikas Mann, 25 – son of B R Mann, assistant commissioner of police, Patel Nagar – and his friends were on the way to Ashok Vihar’s central market for dinner, from Paschim Vihar, when the incident took place around 10:30 pm on Wednesday.

When their Scorpio was opposite Ashok Vihar police station, a bicycle rider took a wrong turn and came in front of their vehicle. In an attempt to save him, their vehicle rammed the road divider and turned turtle. The car was being driven by Vikas, who was apparently under the influence of alcohol.

Police officials rushed them to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where Vikas was declared brought dead. His friends Rahul Kausik, Pulkit Gupta, Prawesh Dahiya, Kamal Garg and Vaibhav Mittal, all aged between 21 to 26, received injuries and admitted to hospital.

They had gone to play some sports at a lounge in Paschim Vihar after drinking at some friends place.

 “An autopsy report will confirm if Vikas was drunk. He was driving the car at 120 kmph. While trying to save a man on bicycle, he lost control over the vehicle leading to the accident. The car was badly damaged and Vikas died on the spot,” said a police officer.

After the autopsy, the body was taken to Vikas’ native village, Sawdha near Kanjhawla, where he was cremated.

Vikas is survived by three sisters and parents. He did his maters in management from Delhi and was working for Microtech.

His friend Prawesh, who had pursued a diploma in Mechanical Engineering had a business of garment exports. His father is an assistant sub-inspector with Delhi police and posted at Old Delhi railway station. Rahul Kaushik, who is also an MBA is working with a private company in Delhi and his father is an assistant sub-inspector posted at Inderlok police station.

Scorpio climbs pavement, injures three

Three rickshaw pullers, sleeping on a pavement at Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi, were injured after an SUV ran over them on the wee hours of Thursday, police said.

Manisha Luthra, 32, a housewife, lost control over her Scorpio at the Laxmi Nagar intersection around 12:30 am and ran over Rajesh Tewari, Nasir Ahmed and Daulat Ram, reports DHNS. She stopped after the accident. “We received a call and rushed to the spot and found three persons injured and the woman helping them,” said a police officer. They were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital along with Manisha. Manisha of Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh was arrested for negligent driving. “We have registered a case against her and impounded the vehicle,” said the officer.
