Accomodation for 500 people, subsidised food coupons available

Patients coming from the economically weaker section will be given free shelter in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The guest houses managed by AIIMS administration will give free beds and subsidised food in dormitories to patients and their families.

“The administration has taken a policy decision to waive charges for poor patients. The objective is that no one should be turned off from availing our facilities due to constraints of lodging,” said Dr Y K Gupta, PRO, AIIMS.

The facility is open to patients from Delhi as well as other states although outstation patients will get preference. AIIMS manages three guest houses -- Raj Gharia, Sureka Vishram Sadan and Sai Dharamshala -- in the campus.

The seekers will have to obtain a recommendation letter from their doctor. Managers of the guest houses will evaluate the requirement of the applicant.

“The needy will be required to produce their Below Poverty Line cards or some other document as proof of poverty. But consideration can be made on other grounds as well. For example, if we find that a person has spent all his money on travel and treatment, then we will consider a waiver,” said Dr Gupta.

Subsidised coupons for food will also be provided to the occupants. A non-governmental organisation- Surekha Public Charity Trust- provides food at the guest houses.

However, AIIMS receives nearly 8,000 patients a day while the guest houses can together accommodate only 500-odd people at a time.
