Even as several waterfalls in our district attract the attention of tourists from all over the State, a majestic waterfall which is located in the neighbouring taluk has not received the attention it rightfully deserves.
Barpi falls, also called as Barpi Paade by locals in Tulu (named after the house that exists next to the falls), is located in Veerakambha on Mangalore-Vittal road.
The fall which is the semblance of scenic beauty has obtained its form through a rivulet which passes by the side of the main road. The majesty and magnificent view that the waterfall offers is enjoyed by everyone, be it a child, youth or an elderly. However, the beauty of the Barpi waterfall is enjoyed only by the localites as hardly any tourists are aware of this hidden beauty.
The water that trickles down the hills offers an enchanting view especially during the monsoon. During the rainy season, the localites find solace playing in this waterfall, as the village crowd, especially the children and youth gather around Barpi fall to play in the water or to catch the fishes that take birth during the first few rains of the monsoon.
The youngsters from the local community who arrive at the fall in monsoon make it a point to catch fishes like mugudu and kalmura that are found in the streams.
Though, the outsiders think twice before keeping their feet in the water, the villagers are quick and daring enough to climb the waterfall! Barpi Paade which is around 10 feet deep, wears a bridal look during the monsoon. Hence, the best time to visit Barpi waterfall is during July and August when the heavy rain lashes the coastal district. The water quantity witnesses dip at the end of October and the following months are not suitable to visit the place.
The falls is located amidst the small houses and the intense flow of water affects the house structures during the heavy rain. Owing to the constant demand of the villagers, the Zilla Panchayat has constructed a retaining wall to these houses so as to avoid any mishap caused by the waterfall.
How to reach?
Barpi Paade waterfall is located in Veerakambha on B.C Road-Vittal road. Several buses ply between Mangalore and Vittal and one can catch those buses and get down at Veerakambha on Kalladka-Kanhangad State Highway.
