With Monday being the last day for filing nominations for the BBMP elections, there was a huge rush of candidates.

A total of 1,166 nominations were filed on Monday by candidates from various political parties and Independents for 168 of the total 198 wards. BBMP officials were still compiling the data of nominations filed for the remaining wards. The final figures will be available only on Tuesday, BBMP sources told Deccan Herald at the time of going to the press.

As the Congress released its list of candidates only on Sunday evening, all its candidates filed their papers on Monday. Similarly, the BJP and JD(S) candidates, whose names did not figure in the earlier lists, also filed their papers on Monday. Candidates, accompanied by their supporters and senior leaders of their respective parties, came in processions to the offices of the returning officers to file the papers.

Prominent among those who filed the papers on Monday included former mayors B S Sathyanarayana, N Shantha Kumari, former deputy mayor S Harish (all BJP) and former Congress corporators.
