A Delhi Police sub-inspector stationed at a vehicle checkpoint was injured after being hit by a motorcycle on central Delhi’s Desh Bandhu Gupta Road on Tuesday. The two motorcycle riders were arrested as they were trying to flee, police said.
The incident took place at 4.15 pm when sub-inspector Ram Niwas, 49, was checking vehicles on East Park Road. He is the in-charge of Siddapura police post.
“Ram Niwas was on duty since 3 pm with six colleagues. The accused were on a red Bajaj Pulsar and were coming from New Rohtak Road towards East Park Road,” said a police officer.
A constable manning the checkpoint had signalled the motorcycle to stop, but the rider took a U-turn and tried to flee. Ram Niwas was standing on the opposite side of the road, and tried to stop them from fleeing.
In his statement, Ram Niwas claimed that the pillion rider told his companion to speed up.
“Ram came in front of the motorcycle and there was no way for them to escape,” the officer added.
But the biker hit Ram and lost his balance. The two men fell on the ground and were overpowered by Ram’s colleagues.
The arrested youths have been identified as Zeeshan and Mohammad Shoaib, residents of Shadipur in central Delhi.
“Ram sustained injuries on his leg and was taken to Jeewan Mala Hospital,” the officer said.
Zeeshan and Shoaib have a criminal history and were earlier arrested for snatching in central Delhi.
“Zeeshan was not carrying his driving licence or the motorcycle’s documents,” the officer added.
They did not commit any crime on Tuesday and have denied involvement in any recent snatching incidents. They claimed that they tried to flee over the fear of getting caught without proper documents.
