A Buddhist monk from Arunachal Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his sister’s house in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.
While the exact cause leading to the extreme step is not known yet, it is suspected that he was depressed over the defeat of a close relative who had contested the recent Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
A suicide note, written in Tibetan language, was recovered from a diary lying on a study table in the room he hung himself.
A police officer said that the victim has chosen not to blame anyone for his suicide in his final letter and has just mentioned that he has committed so many sins that even God would not forgive him.
The reason behind the step was not mentioned in the note, police said, and added that they are speaking to his family to ascertain the possible causes.
The suicide note has been sent for a handwriting test and for exact translation.
T G Rimpoche, 47, is said to be known to Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader and hailed from a political background in Arunachal Pradesh. He had arrived at Delhi from his state on May 2 and was staying at his sister’s place.
His body was found hanging from the ceiling fan at about 1 am on Saturday by his sister. Police were informed immediately and the body sent for post-mortem.
The questioning of his family so far has revealed that he was “upset” ever since he received news that his close relative was defeated in the polls on Sunday.
Senior police officers chose not to disclose the name of that relative.
His family has told police that Rimpoche kept silent the whole of Friday and stayed all alone in his room after hearing the defeat of his relative.
They, however, are not sure if that contributed to the suicide.
Rimpoche also suffered from sleeping disorder for which he was undergoing treatment for the past one year and that had left him troubled, said the officer, adding that foul play has been ruled out in the incident.
