Chinese diver Wu Minxia sealed her legacy on Sunday with a gold medal, bringing her all-time Olympic medal tally to six and equalling the record held by her one-time partner Guo Jingjing.
Without missing a beat, Wu performed a polished series of dives in the women's 3M springboard final, scoring 414 points and beating He Zi, with whom she won gold in the synchronised event last week, into silver on 379.2.
The bronze medal went to Laura Sanchez of Mexico.
Soryan, Vlasov triumph
Iran’s Hamid Soryan won his country's first ever Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling on Sunday, cruising to victory over the reigning world champion.
Cheering wildly and waving their country's flag, Iranian supporters ran to the side of the packed arena to try to hug Soryan, whose right eye was bloodied and bruised.
The second of the day's two gold medals went to Russian favourite Roman Vlasov in the 74kg category. He beat Armenia's Arsen Julfalakyan in the 74kg final after surviving a scare in the quarterfinals when France's experienced Christophe Guenot came close to knocking him out of the competition in the final seconds of their bout.
Hansen wins omnium
Denmark's Lasse Norman Hansen finished with a scorching time-trial to win the Olympic men's track cycling omnium event on Sunday.
Hansen was tied in a three-way points lead with France's Bryan Coquard, who claimed the silver, and Italy's Elia Viviani heading into the showdown event but he edged out all his gold-medal rivals in the decider to clinch the title.
Australia survive
Australia survived a heart-stopping extra time period against China to win on penalties while Hungary also moved into the women's waterpolo Olympic semifinals on Sunday by saving a last-gasp Russian penalty.
The 20-18 victory meant that 2008 bronze medallists Australia maintained their unbeaten run, the eventual victors taking the lead in extra time and then conceding before hitting the crossbar with two seconds to go. The tussle went to penalties, which they won 4-2, only for the emotions to surface.
Hungary's 11-10 defeat of Russia meant the women's campaign to win their first Olympic medal in water polo stayed on track.
Mustafina stuns
Aliya Mustafina upset the favourites by taking the gold medal on the asymmetric bars in the gymnastics apparatus finals after all-around champion Gabby Douglas fluffed her routine.
