A Delhi Police constable was shot at by his childhood friend after a heated argument broke out between them in south-west Delhi, said police on Thursday.

Constable Harkesh, 23, posted at north Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, was shot at by the friend at a restaurant in Yadav Dharamshala in Baba Haridas Nagar where they had gone for dinner on Wednesday night.

Harkesh and his friend from Najafgarh’s Gopal Nagar had an argument over an issue related to their family affairs. Harkesh’s friend hit him with a jug. Enraged, Harkesh started calling his other friends on phone.

Seeing Harkesh making calls and abusing him, his friend suddenly pulled out Harkesh’s service revolver and fired at his leg. He fled in Harkesh’s Santro car, said Anil Kumar Ojha, additional commissioner of police (south-west).

Harkesh then called his elder brother Sanjay Bhan, informing him that he had been shot at. Immediately, Sanjay called police and said Harkesh has been shot at by “three assailants” who had fled with his car. “We sent a police team within minutes and rushed Harkesh to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon,” Ojha said.

Harkesh’s condition is out of danger. In his statement to police, he said he had picked up his friend for dinner after he had finished his duty.

According to the constable’s statement, his friend fired at him in a fit to rage and did not intend to kill him.

Police have registered a case and are conducting raids to trace the accused, an officer said.
