A school teacher was ordered by a Delhi court to pay Rs 6,000 as maintenance to his wife and two daughters.
The woman left him fearing for her life and those of her daughters, following harassments for giving birth to girls.
Metropolitan magistrate Savitri asked the husband, a teacher in a school at Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, to give Rs 2,000 per month each to his wife and daughters.
The court said both daughters are entitled for maintenance till they are adults.
“The respondent has not given any amount for maintenance of his school-going children. In modern days, a handsome amount has to be spent on education and its upkeep," the magistrate said.
The woman gave birth to two baby girls in 2005 and 2007. She was harassed for not bringing sufficient dowry.
"The woman’s parents afforded the medical expenses during the girls’ birth. She was taunted for giving birth to girls. On June 7, 2007, the complainant left the matrimonial house after she heard a conspiracy to kill her,” the court said.
She told the court that about Rs 3 lakh was spent in the marriage. But her husband and in-laws demanded Rs 1 lakh in cash and a piece of land.
The man had opposed his wife's plea for maintenance saying she is working as a computer operator and takes tuitions. The court rejected man's submission.
