A government doctor was suspended on Friday for prescribing branded medicines in violation of the Rajasthan medical and health department directives.
Generic medicines are given to patients for free in state government hospitals under a free medicine scheme.
A doctor can only prescribe branded medicines if generic ones are unavailable in hospital.Dr P C Tanwar, who was posted at a government hospital in Nokha in Bikaner, was suspended immediately, said principal secretary (medical and health) B N Sharma.
“We got complaints that he had been prescribing branded medicines to patients, who bought them from the open market,” said Sharma.
He said Dr Tanwar prescribed branded medicines although free generic ones were available in hospital.
