Nearly 100 to 120 flights were cancelled or rescheduled at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport- India's second busiest airport- on Monday following the closure of the main runway for six hours for pre-monsoon maintenance work.
On Tuesday, too, a six-hour block- from 11 am to 5 pm- will be undertaken to facilitate the maintenance work, said a spokesperson of the airport.
GVK Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), a joint venture between a GVK-led consortium and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), handles the airport.
The MAIL has not given any figures on the cancelled or rescheduled flights.
On an average, there are over 950 flight that arrive and depart from the airport every day.
It has two crossing runways- 09/27 (the main) and 14/32 (the secondary runway). While the main runway can handle up to 48 flights per hour, the secondary runway handles 35 in the same period.
The bulk of the flights that were affected are from Air India and Jet Airways.
