A 19-year-old girl was injured after she tried to kill herself by jumping off the platform and on to the street below Preet Vihar Metro station in east Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Pinki Chaurasia from Ghaziabad decided to commit suicide after an argument with her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day, police said.

“We got a call in the afternoon that a girl had jumped off the elevated metro station.

Witnesses said she had been talking to a man on the platform,” a police official said. Pinki was taken to a nearby hospital, and was later sent to another hospital in Patparganj as she sustained severe injuries.

“She received head injuries and her condition is critical,” the officer said. She has been pursuing a multimedia and animation course from a private institute in Preet Vihar.

Pinki’s father Rajmani said she was returning home from the institute when the incident happened.

“She left home on Tuesday morning saying she was going to attend classes at her Preet Vihar institute. We have no idea about the reason behind her action,” Rajmani said.

A case has been registered with Yamuna Bank (metro) police station.

“We are examining CCTV footage at the station. We are also looking out for the man who was with Pinki,” the official said.
