Lakshman Singh (46), a resident of West Bengal, got a new lease of life when he underwent a heart transplant on Saturday at a private hospital here.
The donor was a 45-year-old man, who suffered severe head injuries in a road accident on July 6. The patient was taken to the emergency at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj by the police in an unconscious state. The patient had met with an accident at Fatehpur Beri near Chattarpur.
After the patient was declared brain dead, the hospital discussed the possiblity of organ donation with the patient’s family members.
“The proposal to donate his organs was discussed with the family members who gave their consent, despite their greatest hour of grief. The hospital informed NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) and police clearance was taken, this being a medico-legal case,” said a hospital spokesperson.
The donor’s life helped several lives with the heart being sent to Medanta, one kidney to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and another to Safdarjung Hospital. The liver was sent to Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon.
According to Fortis Hospital, the heart was transported from the hospital in Vasant Kunj to Medanta, Gurgaon in 12 minutes around 6.30 am.
“The heart transplant was successfully carried out on a 46-year-old man from Burdwan, West Bengal. The patient is stable now. The patient was on the wait list,” said a hospital spokesperson.
Currently, there is a huge demand-supply gap of organs with few donations from cadavers. People are put on waiting list for months or years before they can undergo organ transplant. According to experts, there is an immediate need to sensitise people on the importance of organ donation in case of brain dead patients so that this gap is bridged.
