Australia finish second on the table

What a brilliant game we witnessed to the group stages. Perfect way to end it. It was an enthralling match from start to end. South African openers started well, hitting 73 in the first powerplay before losing their wickets. Skipper du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen then shared a massive stand, the former making a hundred, while the latter almost made one, to take them to 326.

Australia started poorly, losing Finch and Smith early, as Khawaja retired hurt in between with a hamstring tear. Stoinis hung around for a while with Warner before being run out by a smart piece of work from de Kock. The keeper then took a blinder to send Maxwell back but this is where the Aussie fighting spirit came to the fore.

Carey joined Warner and together they scored quickly, the latter getting his third hundred in the process. The game looked to be Australia's before Pretorius returned and struck first ball, removing Warner courtesy a great catch from Morris. Cummins then perished quickly before Morris got the big wicket of Carey after he had started whacking the spinners.

Khawaja then walked out despite being injured, and him and Starc hit a few lusty blows to raise hopes for the Aussies but Rabada prised them out in the penultimate over. Phehlukwayo then held his nerve in the final one to seal the game.

We now enjoy a two-day break from cricket, before returning for the first semi-final between India and New Zealand on Tuesday. Do join us then, till then, look back and reflect an amazing month this has been. Goodnight!

SA 34/0 (4 overs)

3.1 Behrendorff to de Kock, 1 run, fuller ball on the stumps, worked to mid wicket for one

3.2 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT, a good-looking drive down the ground, but straight to mid off

3.3 Behrendorff to Markram, FOUR, he is looking in great touch! Short and wide, he moves his feet superbly, in shape for the cut and executes it perfectly

3.4 Behrendorff to Markram, FOUR, this is the best of the lot and believe me, there is some competition to beat. Friendly half volley outside off, he presses forward and drives it with a high elbow and straight bat, past extra cover and mid off

3.5 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT, short now, and he leaves it alone

3.6 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT.

SA 25/0 (3 overs)

2.1 Starc to de Kock, DOT, good ball! Length just outside off, Quinton is beaten by pace on the cut/steer

2.2 Starc to de Kock, 2 runs, he gets into the act now. Full and angling in, the batsman plays a classic on drive past mid wicket for a couple

2.3 Starc to de Kock, 1 run, glanced to fine leg

2.4 Starc to Markram, DOT, goes short for the first time today, and he ducks under it

2.5 Starc to Markram, WIDE, bowls it full and wide hoping for some inswing, it doesn't but rather goes past the tramline

2.5 Starc to Markram, DOT, the stock ball- a yorker outside off, dug out well

2.6 Starc to Markram, DOT.

SA 21/0 (2 overs)

Behrendorff with the other new ball.

1.1 Behrendorff to de Kock, 2 runs, he is off the mark too. Length ball angled in, tucked easily to mid wicket for a couple

1.3 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT, he is playing this back foot punches well. Gets one angled across again, punches to cover

1.4 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT, length ball on off, defended down the wicket

1.5 Behrendorff to Markram, DOT, looks to defend this one straight, gets an outside edge that runs along the ground to backward point

1.6 Behrendorff to Markram, FOUR, class! Fuller on off, he gets forward nicely and drives on the up, and it runs past a diving cover

SA 14/0 (1 over)

de Kock walks out with Markram today because Amla has a knee injury. It is quite a vibrant duo, and they are good attackers of the ball too, so they will want to enjoy themselves. Starcwill start things off for the Aussies.

0.1 Starc to Markram, FOUR WIDES, that is inauspicious! Swing immediately but starts on leg and moves away past the stumps and a diving keeper

0.1 Starc to Markram, DOT, better one now, angled across outside off, left alone

0.2 Starc to Markram, WIDE, another one down leg. Mitch has to get his lines together quickly

0.2 Starc to Markram, DOT, on the money now. Full length on the stumps, defended equally solidly

0.3 Starc to Markram, DOT, full again, but wide of off, Aiden shoulders arms

0.4 Starc to Markram, FOUR, first runs of the bat and a good shot to get it too! Back of a length outside off, he punches well and gets it over backward point

0.5 Starc to Markram, DOT, length wide of off, he is not enticed into the drive/cut

0.6 Starc to Markram, FOUR, super shot again! Length ball outside off, he punches much squarer this time and gets it past both point fielders

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock(wk), Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Jean-Paul Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi

SA win toss; to bat first

Faf calls it right and he will bat first. A forced change as Amla was struck on the knee yesterday in practice, and so Shamsi is back as an extra spinner.

Finch says he enjoyed the break, and looks forward to playing again. No changes for Australia

Proteas play last game of horrid WC

South Africa have had a terrible World Cup with both on-field and off-field issues plaguing them no end. They did get a big victory against Sri Lanka last time out though so do have some confidence coming into the game.

Australia have been on a roll ever since the loss against India, and have also found their best XI since inducting Behrendorff and Lyon into the team.
