ICC World Cup India vs West Indies Highlights: India roll over an insipid Windies sideThe batsmen showed no fight, and the bowlers were exceptional

India win by 125 runs

Let's be honest, does this second innings even deserve to be talked about? What was that from West Indies, everyone talked about them being dark horses for the semi-final and here they are, surrendering meekly to a not-so-imposing target. The Indian bowlers were brilliant, but they had enough quality batters to withstand the pressure.

But they did not. Shami started things by getting Gayle off a pacy short ball, and then followed it up with a beautiful incoming delivery to Hope. Ambris and Pooran offered some resistance, even putting on a 50-run stand but once the former fell, it all went downhill.

Pooran stepped out and holed to long off, Holder came and went in no time and Carlos Brathwaite, the hero of the last game, was out to a beauty from Bumrah and some brilliance from MS too. Allen fell on the very next ball, while Hetmyer could not resist chasing a wide one. The last two wickets had some fun, hitting a couple of sixes and boundaries before Shami finished things off with a snorter.

All in all, a comprehensive performance by India though their middle order concerns remain. Kohli and Shastri will ponder over that after they celebrate the victory, and they'll have to find a solution soon because the other teams might not fold so easily.

It was great fun to bring you updates from this game. Join us tomorrow as Sri Lanka hope to keep their hopes alive against South Africa. Goodnight!

WI 143 (34.2 overs)

Shami brought back to finish things off.

34.1 Shami to Thomas, DOT, length from round the wicket, defended down the wicket

34.2 Shami to Thomas, OUT, Virat goes for the DRS! This is a short ball, Oshane wanted to get out of the way, it struck his arm and lobbed to first slip. Replays show it took his glove, so that will be that. Shami does finish things off

Thomas c Rohit b Shami 6(11)

WI 143/9 (34 overs)

33.1 Chahal to Roach, FOUR, full on the stumps, slog swept away to the deep mid wicket fence

WI 129/9 (32 overs)

31.1 Chahal to Thomas, DOT.

31.2 Chahal to Thomas, OUT, has slip taken this? Umpires go upstairs, the soft signal is out. This was a googly on leg, turned into the left hander, it took the outside edge and slip dived to take it. Fingers do not seem to be underneath the ball, it was Rohit there. The Indians are having a laugh, Rohit brings out his tongue in jest, as if to suggest maybe it touched the grass. Third umpire is looking at it a lot, he decided it has touched the grass

31.3 Chahal to Thomas, DOT, length outside off, defended down the wicket

31.4 Chahal to Thomas, FOUR, leg break on leg, slog swept away behind square

31.5 Chahal to Thomas, DOT, defends the googly well

31.6 Chahal to Thomas, DOT, dropped at deep mid wicket, would you believe it? Everyone is stunned

WI 124/9 (31 overs)

Kuldeep is back now.

30.1 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT.

30.2 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT, defends on the front foot

30.3 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT, leg break on off, front foot defence brought out again

30.4 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT, now the away turner, just about gets bat on it Kemar

30.5 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT, driven very powerfully, but to mid off

30.6 Kuldeep to Roach, DOT

WI 124/9 (30 overs)

29.1 Chahal to Cottrell, FOUR, he wants to have some fun out there. This is short and he pulls off the front foot, gets it to the deep mid wicket ropes

29.2 Chahal to Cottrell, SIX, oh wow that is huge! Well flighted one on off, Sheldon set himself up, saw it for a lot of time, and is clobbered way into the long on stands. 95m!

29.3 Chahal to Cottrell, DOT, played to cover

29.4 Chahal to Cottrell, DOT, steered to backward point

29.5 Chahal to Cottrell, OUT, walks now. Chahal bowled the googly outside off, of course the no.10 did not pick it, went back to defend and the bat was nowhere near

Cottrell lbw b Chahal 10(8)

Last man in is Oshane Thomas

29.6 Chahal to Thomas, DOT.

WI 114/8 (29 overs)

Sheldon Cottrell walks out at no.10

28.4 Shami to Cottrell, WIDE, hostile welcome to the crease! Bowls it short and he just about gets out of the way

28.4 Shami to Cottrell, DOT, short again, and he misses the pull this time

28.5 Shami to Cottrell, DOT, drops the short ball towards mid wicket, Sheldon and Kemar literally are debating there. Kemar had his left hand up to say, "why do you want to run?"

28.6 Shami to Cottrell, 1 leg byes

WI 112/8 (28.3 overs)

28.2 Shami to Hetmyer, DOT, goes back of a length on middle stump line, defended down the pitch

28.3 Shami to Hetmyer, OUT, the last of the batsman is gone! Surely India's game now. Shami came round the wicket and went full very wide of off, Shimron threw his hands at that, and the edge went straight to backward point. Sinking very quickly

Hetmyer c Rahul b Shami 18(29)

That will be drinks too, do not know what the Windies are going to discuss really

WI 107/7 (26.2 overs)

Fabian Allen at no.8

26.2 Bumrah to Allen, OUT, two in two! This is excellent from Bumrah and Kohli. He brought his strike bowler back and he has delivered twice in the same over. He angled this length ball in, Fabian was across the line, is struck on the pads, maybe the height was an issue initially. But the finger had gone, the batsman went for the DRS and it showed umpire's call on wickets

Allen lbw b Bumrah 0(1)

WI 107/6 (26.1 overs)

26.1 Bumrah to Brathwaite, OUT, brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Bumrah bowled it on a length, angled in initially, then straightened off the pitch. It caught the outside edge of Carlos, and went to the right of MS. He was moving initially to the other side, but leaped beautifully to his right and took it one-handed. That would have gone through keeper and slip because there was a big gap, but there is nothing to worry about when it is MS behind the stumps. The dangerman is gone!

Brathwaite c Dhoni b Bumrah 1(5)

WI 107/5 (26 overs)

25.6 Chahal to Hetmyer, DOT.

WI 101/5 (25 overs)

Bumrah is back. Carlos Brathwaite in at no.7

24.1 Bumrah to Hetmyer, DOT, length ball angled across, defended on the front foot

24.2 Bumrah to Hetmyer, DOT, fuller length, outside off, defended to point

24.3 Bumrah to Hetmyer, 2 runs, goes short and is pulled wide of mid on for a couple

24.4 Bumrah to Hetmyer, 1 run, off cutter on leg stump, turned to square leg. Carlos wanted a second there, but it was not there at all, it is a poor throw too, could have been trouble with a better one

24.5 Bumrah to Brathwaite, DOT, leg cutter now, Carlos chips it, Virat ran in and dived from cover but just fell short

24.6 Bumrah to Brathwaite, DOT.

23.3 Chahal to Holder, DOT, classic leg break! Beats the outside edge on the front foot, just a little low too

23.4 Chahal to Holder, DOT.

23.5 Chahal to Holder, OUT, skipper walks too! Jason reached out for this loopy leg break, does not get to the pitch at all, drives aerially nevertheless, and it goes into the hands of extra cover on the edge of the circle

Holder c Jadhav b Chahal 6(13)

WI 92/4 (22 overs)

WI 80/4 (20.2 overs)

20.1 Kuldeep to Pooran, DOT, looped up on leg, defended down the wicket

20.2 Kuldeep to Pooran, OUT, he walks too! This was the traditional chinaman, Nico wanted to slog, the bat turns in his hands as he did that, went a long way up but long off took it comfortably

Pooran c Shami b Kuldeep 28(50)

WI 80/3 (20 overs)

Shimron Hetmyer walks in at no.5. He walked out with a helmet and then switched to a hat. Has a light chat with KL Rahul too. Looks relaxed, good signs for the Windies. Kedar Jadhav is into the attack.

17.3 Pandya to Ambris, 1 run, length ball cramping for room, chopped to third man

17.4 Pandya to Pooran, 1 run, short ball sticking to the pitch, Nico mistimes the pull and it just falls over a backtracking Rohit at mid wicket. Lucky!

17.5 Pandya to Ambris, FOUR, more convincing! Full outside off, Sunil slogs it with all his might, gets it wide of deep mid wicket

17.6 Pandya to Ambris, OUT, what a response! Dropped on a length, and coming in off the deck, it was the off cutter actually, Sunil was across the line, and it hit him on the back pad, which convinced the umpire. A frustrating stand is broken!

Ambris lbw b Pandya 31(40)

WI 60/2 (17 overs)

16.1 Kuldeep to Ambris, 1 run, full wide of off, driven to mid off for a quick single

The summary after the first PP from our on-ground reporter

It was a good toss to win for India. It's the same pitch that was used for the previous match between West Indies and New Zealand and may assist spinners in the second half. It’s bright and sunny and though the new ball has swung a bit, the Indian openers negotiated it well with the right mix of caution of aggression before Roach struck to remove Rohit Sharma following a debatable caught behind decision on West Indies’ review. The batsman wasn’t happy with third umpire Michael Gough’s verdict and he had every reason to be as there was a reasonable doubt as to whether the ball went off the bat or pad. The on-field umpire Richard Illingworth had given it not out, and his decision should have stayed. But meanwhile, Virat Kohli has begun confidently and Rahul is looking good. India need a big stand from the two.

Ind 47/1 (10 overs)

9.1 Roach to Kohli, 3 runs, too full on middle, Virat flicks it away past short mid wicket, and takes three easily

9.2 Roach to Rahul, DOT, full on off now, KL strides forward and pushes to cover

9.3 Roach to Rahul, DOT, goes for length on off, defended to backward point

9.4 Roach to Rahul, DOT, full on middle again, defended towards mid on

9.5 Roach to Rahul, DOT, length outside off, angled in, turned to mid wicket

9.6 Roach to Rahul, DOT.

Ind 44/1 (9 overs)

Rohit walked off muttering to himself after that decision and KL was unhappy as well. The third umpire was convinced of the inside edge but it seemed to have hit bat and pad simultaneously. Still the bat was involved, so it was the right decision ultimately.

8.1 Thomas to Rahul, DOT, length outside off, rising up as it went past bat and the stumps

8.2 Thomas to Rahul, DOT, fuller on off, defended down the wicket

8.3 Thomas to Rahul, 2runs, strays onto the pads this time, flicked away easily to fine leg

8.4 Thomas to Rahul, 2 runs, length on leg stump again, flicked again, aerially this time, to backward square for a couple

8.5 Thomas to Rahul, 2 runs, ooh this was a bit close for comfort! Oshane bowls it back of a length, surprised KL, who wanted to leave, but it caught the toe end and went past second slip, and third man does well to save two

8.6 Thomas to Rahul, DOT.

Ind 35/1 (7 overs)

5.3 Roach to Rohit, 1 run, back to the full length now, a soft tap to mid on brings one

5.4 Roach to Rahul, FOUR, that's the first boundary for KL! He was becoming predictable, went too full again, KL merely pushed it past the stumps on the opposite end and it races away past mid on

5.5 Roach to Rahul, 1 run, this time it is length on the stumps, which is easily turned to square leg

5.6 Roach to Rohit, OUT, Holder goes for the DRS! This was bowled beautifully, on a length outside off, angled in by Kemar, Rohit looked to defend and it made a sound as it went past the inside edge to the keeper. Oh, this is close, looks it has taken a slight inside edge! Rohit walks early and it is a big blow for India

Team News

India XI: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli(c), Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni(wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

West Indies XI: Chris Gayle, Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope(wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder(c), Carlos Brathwaite, Fabian Allen, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas

Ind win toss; to bat first

Kohli calls right and he will bat first. He feels it is a used pitch, and with two wrist spinners who can take advantage of the rough patches later on, it is the best decision. No changes for India.

Holder wanted to bat first too, he says. Sunil Ambris makes his WC debut in this game.

A test which may or may not prove to be a stern one

India remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament after Pakistan beat New Zealand yesterday. They will want to maintain that record though it certainly will not be easy against an unpredictable side like West Indies. The latter have lost Andre Russell to injury but still have a host of players who love to take the attack to the opposition.

India may look to get Bhuvneshwar Kumar back into the side as he was seen in the nets a couple of days back. Shami may be the unfortunate bowler to miss out, despite taking a hat-trick in the last game. They may yet choose to rest him, considering the longevity of the tournament.
