The new method, which will help patients forced to undergo knee replacement, has been developed by the principal of a local government medical college. Patients undergoing the treatment will be discharged from the hospital within 3-4 days and will be able to walk freely. Also, patients need to spend only Rs 10,000 instead of several lakh rupees earlier incurred, claims Prof Anand Swarup.

Swarup, principal and head of the orthopaedic department in Ganesh Shanker Vidhyarthi College has been hailed by an American journal for treating 150 patients with this technology.

IIT (Kanpur) also helped in the designing of the implant and equipment and they will soon start designing and manufacturing the steel implant and equipment here. So far the 150 operations used foreign implant and equipments.

"Due to this modified High Tibial Osteotomy technique, knee transplantation of a person is not required. The knee joints are measured and aligned in a proper way and after the artificial implant they are straightened. The patient is sent home within 3-4 days and after a week he can walk and engage in his daily routine," the professor said.
